The Storm
Akiko sat on the porch facing the koi pond. The smallest movement of the heavy, humid air rustled through the nearby cherry tree. Golden light of the late afternoon painted intricate patterns on the waves. The water's surface was calm, and only formed ripples were the stream of fresh water trickled into it or when the sōzu tilted over. It's rhythm gave the scenery a sense of passing time.
Akiko's eyes were looking on the direction of the pond, but her gaze was not fixed on it or anything else.
A frog announced his presence, his appearance hidden among water lilly leaves.
Among the golden reflections of light were flashes of red from below the water. The kois in the pond were swimming around restlessly, yet their movement did not show on the pond's surface.
A black and red macha bowl stood in front of Akiko the matching brush was placed nearby. Both items were decorate with golden charms, resembling lanterns. The frothy tea inside the bowl had long since turned cold, and so had the water in the black teapot.
The rustling of the tree's leave increased. A heavy gust shook it's leaves and the golden light of the late day's sun disappeared behind a thick curtain of black clouds. A storm was approaching and it came fast.
Thunder rumbled, not as distant as it ought to be. The wind grew violent, tugging and pulling at the leaves and branches of the tree, threatening to tear them of.
A mask appeared in Akiko's lap and with a steady look, she stared at the sky. Unbothered by wind and rain, she got up. As the mask hugged her face, a sword appeared in her hand. A smile curled the corners of her lips.
"Well, then this is how it shall be", she said. Lightning cracked across the sky.
A decision was made. A mind was cleared.
I'm pretty sure English teacher woukd either love or hate this. Metaphors everywhere!
