8. Stars
Vega floated through her quarters of the space station. She had turned off all lights, or at least all of those that she was able to. There were always some sources that could not be shut off, mainly those related to safety measurements. These remaining lights created a dim glow, enough for Vega to see and not accidentally bump into something. Unfortunately, these lights were still bright enough to cause reflections on the windows. But Vega had a plan and a roll of black tape. One by one, she covered the lights indicating fuse box, fire extinguisher, emergency exit directions, and overall emergency lighting. She was not terrible throughout with her work, the pieces of tape were placed in weird angles and with folds. It was only a matter of time when it would fall off. But that didn't matter. Vega didn't aim for it to last long anyway. All she wanted was to see the stars from her bed, and that was impossible with all the perpetual lights.
Her quarters were pitch black now.
"Open all windows", she announced, and somewhere behind the metal panels, a computer sprung to live and with a whirring sound, the window shutters retreated into the hull.
Faint starlight poured into the room and Vega pulled herself towards the largest window. This view was exactly what she had wanted. She finally could see the myriads of tiny specks of lights in the endless darkness of space in all their glorious beauty.
