Promptcember 1- Snowfall

A crisp morning chill crept through the open window as Ninim just gradually returned to the land of the waking and rubbed her eyes. She felt Jayla stir beside her too, groaning and pulling the blanket closer to herself and uncovering Ninim’s leg in the process. The cold air made her skin tingle and tense into goosebumps, and she squinted at the window in displeasure. While she could withstand the cold much better than denizens of the more temperate regions, that did not mean she found it particularly pleasant either, especially in the morning when she was still cozy and warm from bed, thank you very much.

But she forgot all about that as her eyes adjusted and registered what she could see beyond the glass. 

Almost like feathers, thick fluffy flakes of snow were gently descending, piling into plush heaps on the windowsill and branches of surrounding trees, and almost instantly, she felt that familiar sting behind her nose that told her this was about to hit her much harder emotionally than was reasonable. There had been snow in the Blighted Wilds when she was there, not even long before she had left as well, but this, the first snow after coming home, touched a different part deep within her soul.

Almost as if sensing the welling emotion beside her, Jayla, still half asleep, rolled over and clumsily wormed her arm through the folds of the blanket until it found Ninim’s waist to wrap around and pull her close. 

That did NOT help. Her vision blurred with tears. Experiencing the first snowfall back home, while waking up to the love of her life right beside her, just filled her heart with a profound joy she had so long believed lost forever. 

She ran her fingers through Jayla's bed-messy hair as she watched through the window, and smiled as she imagined the fresh snow crunching under their boots later on the way to dinner with their families.
