Introduction & Terminology

In book: Spheres 101

Newcomers to Maquette are often confused when they hear a reference to a ‘sphere’.  They look around and the place they are in is not a sphere - there is no planet, after all, and the horizon seems generally flat, not curving upward or downward when measured by instruments and shadows.  (Well, there are exceptions to that… but they are unusual).

This book is for those of you who are wholly new to the topic, and is not intended for more advanced audiences.  We will be covering the basics of what a sphere is and how they work, as well as the impact on technology, magic, medicine, and transportation within a sphere.

A note on some terms used throughout this book:

  • “Material” refers to locations such as planets.  These are places where organic species develop.
  • “Dimensional” refers to locations that can only be accessed magically, such as Maquette or Ignis.  These are places where organic species may live (sometimes), but the species did not develop or originate there.
