Family & Relationships
Dextroluma have generally not followed the human conceit of a ‘nuclear family’. While exact living arrangements may vary, an inter-generational family community or neighborhood is often seen as the norm in most nations. It is relatively common for Dextroluma during their first century or two to spend time outside this arrangement, and there are plenty of communities and neighborhoods across Aerius that try to mimic the concept of a family community for travelers such as these.
After the war against humans, communities and neighborhoods in most nations have sprung up to assist those who are entirely without family for any reason and to give them somewhere to feel at home. To some degree, the war and its losses have normalized the concept of living in a dwelling alone.
In love, Dextroluma most commonly are monogamous, however there is widespread acceptance for polyamory and for simply remaining single, or even for one’s life partner being a friend rather than a lover. This acceptance is diminished among the nobility, but not entirely absent - nobles simply tend to expect there to be a primary partner of some sort.
Nobility are the only class on Aerius that still commonly practice arranged marriages. There are a number of reasons for this - some do it in the manner of business dealings, others do it seeking desirable traits for their family’s genetic profile, and for others it is more political. Plenty hope to acquire Queen Iola’s support to take the place of their nation’s Royals. Arranged marriages typically involve an individual who is assigned male at birth and an individual who is assigned female at birth, but it is not unheard of for families to arrange marriages for a pair who were assigned the same gender at birth or even to arrange marriages where there are more than two individuals involved. Most families will take their childrens’ preferences into account - but certainly not all do. Some families hoping to ascend to nobility do adopt this practice, but many consider it to be outdated.
