In ancient times, Ruby Ridge is said to have been a mountain. Mining by dextroluma slowly diminished that mountain into the present hill, until a campaign convinced a former ruler of the Peaks to designate it as a protected site in the early years of the Transitory Era, allowing for mining in the surrounding area but not of the surface of the hillside.
Geologists believe there must be some sort of unique volcano buried beneath the ridge, however, as measurements taken in recent decades show growth, rather than the expected erosion. This phenomenon would explain why veins of gems in the region have only rarely dried up, and how such a valuable mountain could have survived for so long.
